How much does brand strategy cost?
Short answer
In France, an experienced freelance strategy consultant charges about €743 per day on average (Malt 2026 barometer), so a focused brand strategy of 5 to 10 days typically represents €3,500 to €7,500. Branding agencies work at another scale: the average project reviewed on Clutch costs about $71,650 and takes around 8 months. The price depends less on "who" you hire than on what the work includes: research, positioning, messaging, and whether the strategy is turned into a website and content.
This guide explains what drives the price, what you get at each level, and how to choose without overpaying, or underinvesting.
What is brand strategy, exactly?
Brand strategy is the thinking behind everything your business says and shows. It answers a few hard questions: who you are for, what problem you solve better than others, why people should believe you, and how you should sound. The result is usually a short document (positioning, value proposition, key messages, brand voice) that your team, your website and your sales can all work from.
It is not a logo. A logo expresses the strategy; it does not replace it.
What the market data says (2026)
There is no official price list for brand strategy, but two public sources give reliable benchmarks.
Freelance consultants: day rates in France (Malt 2026 barometer, strategy consultants active on Malt over the last 3 months)
| Experience | Average day rate |
|---|---|
| 0–2 years | €399 |
| 3–7 years | €525 |
| 8–15 years | €743 |
| 15+ years | €947 |
A brand strategy for a startup or SME usually takes 5 to 10 days of work (research, workshops, positioning, messaging, roadmap). At these rates, that is roughly €3,500 to €7,500 with an experienced consultant, and more with a very senior one.
Branding agencies: project budgets (Clutch, based on verified client reviews)
- Average branding project: about $71,650, over about 8 months.
- Most reviewed projects: $10,000 to $49,999.
- Typical agency hourly rate for brand strategy: $100–149 in the US, $50–99 in the UK.
Agency projects cost more because they include larger teams, more research and often a full identity system. Be wary of very low prices for a “full brand strategy”: at that level, you are usually buying a template, not a strategy for your business.
What drives the price
- Research depth. Interviews with customers, a competitor review and a look at your data take time, and they are what make a strategy specific to you.
- Number of stakeholders. A founder alone decides fast. Three co-founders, a board or several teams need workshops and alignment.
- Deliverables. Positioning and messaging only, or also a visual identity, website copy, a website, a content plan?
- Markets and languages. One market in one language costs less than a brand that must work in English, French and other markets.
- Implementation. A strategy that stays in a PDF is cheaper, and less useful, than one turned into a website and content that use it.

Is brand strategy worth it for a small business?
It is worth it when the problem is clarity, not visibility. Signs you need it:
- People like what you do but struggle to explain it to others.
- Your website, LinkedIn and sales deck each tell a slightly different story.
- You compete on price because you can’t say why you are different.
- Your offer has grown, but your brand still describes the business you were three years ago.
If none of this sounds familiar and you only need a logo or a few social templates, a full strategy is probably more than you need.
How to choose without overpaying
- Start from your problem, not a package. A fuzzy message needs positioning work; a clear brand with a weak website needs a website project.
- Ask what is included, in writing. Number of workshops, research, revisions, deliverables, and who does the work.
- Ask how the strategy will be used. The best strategy is the one your website, sales and team actually apply.
- Start small if you are unsure. A single session or a diagnostic shows you the gaps before you commit to a full project.
Frequently asked questions
How much does brand strategy cost for a startup?
With an experienced freelance consultant in France (average day rate €743 according to Malt's 2026 barometer), 5 to 10 days of work represents roughly €3,500 to €7,500. Agency projects are larger: Clutch reports an average branding project of about $71,650. A single strategy session costs a few hundred euros.
How long does brand strategy take?
From one session to about two weeks for core positioning and messaging, and one to two months when it includes a website.
What is the difference between brand strategy and brand identity?
Strategy defines what you stand for and what you say; identity (logo, colours, typography) expresses it visually. Strategy comes first.
Can I do brand strategy myself?
You can start: write down who you serve, the problem you solve and why you are different. An outside view helps most when you are too close to your business to see what makes it different.
